Climate change

Empreinte CarboneOver 40% of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions, the main greenhouse gas which causes climate change, actually come from the energy we use every day - at home and when we travel.

Do Air Source Heat Pumps really work?

Yes, the technology is very straight forward - they simply move energy from the outside air and convert it in to energy (heat) that is fed in to the house. An ordinary fridge works on the same basic principle, but in reverse. For example; if you buy some white wine and take it home and put it in the fridge, it starts out at room temperature and gradually the fridge lowers the temperature of the wine ready for drinking (if you can wait….).  During this process the heat is extracted from the wine by the heat flowing out of the wine to the lower temperature surrounding it in the fridge.  The fridge then compresses the heat extracted and expels it out of the back of the fridge – you will be able to feel the heat being radiated from the refrigerant loop at the rear of the fridge. By using the same process, Air Source Heat Pumps remove energy from the outside air and transfer it into your building. The sun naturally replenishes the energy removed from the air so the heat source is infinitely renewable.

How is the heat transferred into a building?

The air holds heat generated by a number of sources. The air source heat pump (“ASHP”) can collect and manage energy found in the outdoor air. With this system there is no need for digging or drilling and installation is very quick and simple. The air collected from outside is connected to the heat pump which takes the heat out of the air using the condenser and the heat exchanger in the unit and transfers it into a heating circuit and/or hot water tank inside the house.

How energy efficient is a heat pump?

Heat Pump Systems can be over five times as energy efficient as the most efficient gas or oil boiler. Instead of burning a fuel and producing the associated emissions they simply move energy that already exists - stored energy in the air generated by the sun. If you compare their performance against solar panels fitted to roofs, ASHP’s can produce over six times more renewable energy. This is because they provide central heating whereas solar panels generally cannot.

ESP Ecocent Success

Another success for ESP and its unique Ecocent domestic hot water system!

This 12 house development in Winchester managed to reach the desired Code for Sustainable Homes rating (carried out by NHBC) target because the Ecocent provided a major boost for the green credentials of the development.

This is just another reason why the Ecocent is a must for any new development.  Please feel free to call us for further details.
